ABBA Fund’s mission is to assist Christian families committed to caring for orphans in loving, nurturing Christ-centered family environments. We are a diverse community of Christian families helping other Christian families adopt and champion the cause of the orphan at home and around the world.
Our vision is to ensure that every Christ-centered family, whose hearts have been stirred by God to adopt, would be able to move forward toward adoption without fear of finances. ABBA Fund seeks to glorify God through our ministry efforts, to obey His Holy Scriptures concerning His design of family and caring for the orphan, and to assist those who share our biblical commitment.
The fear of the financial costs is a tactic that Satan has used to sideline many, many families. Research from the Dave Thomas Foundation and the Barna Group tells us that 26-33% of the general population has “seriously considered” adoption – but 79-82% of those are concerned about the cost of adoption … and less than 2% end up adopting. Of those that do adopt — despite the mountains of paperwork, the long wait periods extend to 3-5 years in many cases, and the daunting financial reality of $20,000-$40,000 for the typical adoption — Catholics are 3 times as likely to adopt as the general population, and Evangelicals are 5 times as likely.
Our heart is helping orphans become sons and daughters in loving, nurturing Christian family environments where they will not only experience the love of Jesus Christ, but be introduced to the person of Jesus Christ — and prayerfully one day trust in Him so that they will be adopted into Abba, Father’s family through salvation … thus, the name of our ministry. (Rom 8:14-16; Gal 4:4-6; Eph. 1:4-6)
ABBA Fund believes a Christian family is one that lines up with biblical principles in which each member understands and fulfills his or her God-given role. The Scripturally-defined family is not an institution designed by man, but created by God and is comprised of one man, one woman and their children (both by birth and adoption). It is this family structure to which ABBA Fund focuses its mission. We also believe a single-parent led household upholding God’s Scriptural standards can provide a loving, nurturing environment of care for orphans.
Our hope and prayer is all children will have the blessing of being cared for in a loving, nurturing family environment within their own language and culture — and acknowledge that this is the best scenario for a child as beautifully captured by Dr. John Piper in his post of Christian Adoption: Disavowals and Affirmations and as affirmed as “priorities in response to orphan need” in the Understanding Orphan Statistics white paper from the Christian Alliance for Orphans, of which ABBA Fund is a long-time member.
But when the systems put in place to provide for children in their cultures have totally failed, and stable families in that culture are unwilling or unable to care for these children, then we believe that care for these orphans in Christian family environments provides the best opportunity for loving, nurturing care — and not just through adopting in or into the United States, but also helping international Christian families adopt orphans in their own culture and country. And in situations where adoption is not an option, we want to help Christian families provide as close to a loving, nurturing family environment for orphans as possible in culturally appropriate ways. Every child deserves a family.
Our Perpetual Loan Fund Model …
ABBA Fund’s primary form of assistance is through interest-free loans to help families complete their adoptions — funds that have been created through the generous gifts and sacrifices of the adoptive families and orphan care champions in our community.
Since 2004 ABBA Fund has helped 940+ orphans become part of more than 750+ Christian families with $5.2 million in adoption assistance — and those numbers are continually increasing because of the perpetual nature of our loan funds. As current ABBA Fund-assisted families pay back their loans, those dollars are loaned out to new families adopting. The monthly repayments of existing families provides $45,000-$60,000 a month in fresh loan funds being available — not quite enough to meet the needs of all the applications we receive, but enough for the ABBA Fund to continually provide adoption assistance to Christ-centered families.
Our interest-free loans are strategically used to help families overcome the cash crunch faced at the end of most adoptions to bring their children home. These loans are typically no more than 1/3 of the overall cost of the adoption, and average in the $6,000-$8,000 range. Our interest-free loan funds have been made possible through the generous contributions of individuals and churches — and the ongoing loan repayments from current adoptive family recipients. To find our more about these loans, click over to Interest-Free Loans page under How We Can Help.
With about $2.5 million in total interest-free loan funds today, ABBA Fund anticipates it would take about twice that amount to meet the current need that is consistently reflected in the loan applications we receive. ABBA Fund is able to assist only about 40% of the families that apply, and typically at an amount less than the need the family has expressed.
Our Pursuit of Innovative Adoption Assistance Strategies …
ABBA Fund is continually monitoring the needs of Christian families called to adopt and care for orphans, and continually exploring new strategies and opportunities to help them fulfill their call and provide the type of loving, nurturing Christian family environment that is at the heart of ABBA Fund’s mission.
Beginning in summer of 2013, ABBA Fund has taken the legal steps needed and structured our internal processes to begin offering Family Adoption Funds as part of a Christian Family Adoption Grant Fund that we are establishing. This fund will allow charitable support to be given directly to help Christian families that have demonstrated a financial need through our application process and align with our Statement of Faith. Support from the family’s individual Family Adoption Funds can be disbursed as grants to pay for adoption services.
Our Community of Families …
Fulfilling our mission goes well beyond financial assistance … and it starts way before a “gotcha day” and lasts well after the excitement of bringing a child home. With a growing community of 600+ adoptive families ABBA Fund has assisted, we hope to spark a sense of community and encouragement among adoptive Christian families. ABBA Fund is committed to serving adoptive families by connecting them to the celebrations and struggles faced by peers, showcasing the creative ways they have overcome obstacles and shared blessings, and guiding families adopting to the many resources available to help along the way of every stage of adoption.
That’s why when God raises up a champion for orphans and adoptive families from within our community, ABBA Fund prayerfully explores how to best come alongside that champion and provide encouragement and a platform for their ministry efforts. We recognize the power of an adoptive family to awaken the heart of the church to the needs among orphans worldwide — so ABBA Fund is exploring how to help our community of families and the children they adopted raise support for orphan care projects focused on the millions they had to leave behind. Everything from providing needed assistance to the orphanages and programs they adopted their own child from to helping international Christian families adopt orphans in their own culture and country. And in countries where adoption is not an option, we’re activating our adoptive family community to help Christian families provide as close to a loving, nurturing family environment as possible in culturally appropriate ways.
