Shields Family Adoption

After seeing a Facebook post about a hosting program through a friend, we knew immediately that the Lord was calling us towards opening our home and hearts to another child. We had always had an inkling that our family was not quite complete. When we saw the picture of Grisha, our hearts immediately swelled and felt a tug towards action. We agreed to hosting and opened ourselves up to the experience of having a 3rd child in the home. What we didn’t know at the outset was how much warmth and tenderness would result from loving on a child that had known no previous “family”. This experience was transformational and we knew we wanted to explore further the possibility of adding him to our family permanently. We had him out again the following summer and during that time we had a chance to really bond with him and him with us.

After Grisha left we prayed many times about adoption. In doing so we felt the call to look after orphans as described in James 1:27 and we believe that God led this young boy into our lives to give us this opportunity. As we prayed and talked more, we felt not just the call to look after him, but to be his parents forever. We feel uniquely equipped to love, support, and care for Grisha. To provide the safety and security that he has never known. It will not be easy, but it will be worth it. Not only for his future, but for ours and for deepening our faith, trust, and dependency on the Lord. We look to Him to be the ultimate provider and caregiver for us all through this process of adoption.

Our whole family has fallen in love with Grisha and we desire to make him a part of our family. We send short messages and selfies back and forth to him through VK (the Eastern European version of Facebook). We get to express our love for him and he, too, expresses his love for us and our family. We look forward to the day when we can replace electronic messages with hugs and time together.

Please prayerfully consider joining us in this journey through prayer and encouragement as well as a financial contribution. The expenses associated with a Ukrainian adoption exceed $30,000. We are blessed to be able to shoulder a large part of these expenses but we cannot cover it all. We move forward in faith that this is the right course of action and that God will help us through whatever lies ahead. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Faithfully,
John and Lisa

**AN IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION FROM ABBA FUND ABOUT YOUR DONATION**
Using the online form on this page automatically submits a request to preference your gift to the family profiled on this page as part of ABBA Fund’s Christian Family Adoption Grant Fund. ABBA Fund administers this fund and maintains full control and administration of all donated funds. We also strive to honor our donor’s preference requests in accordance with IRS and Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) guidelines.

The IRS allows donors to state a preference of how their contribution is used and request that the gift support a particular family — and it allows the charitable organization (ABBA Fund) to fully consider that request as long as the donor understands and acknowledges for charitably given tax-deductible gifts that the ultimate authority regarding the disposition of your gift is at the discretion of the charitable organization. By using this online form, or other method described above, you are acknowledging an understanding of those IRS guidelines.

As required by IRS regulations, any tax-deductible donation is made to the charitable organization (ABBA Fund) and not the individual (family) — otherwise it is a non-deductible gift and should be given directly to the family. Every gift into the Christian Family Adoption Grant Fund is helping reduce the financial burden of adoption for families that have qualified for adoption assistance from ABBA Fund.

ABBA Fund is grateful for each donation given to the Christian Family Adoption Grant Fund, and broad participation in the fund helps ensure that ABBA Fund is able to assist each approved family with the grant and loan funds preferenced to reduce the financial burden of their adoption. ABBA Fund, a 501(c)(3) ministry, has provided more than $6.5 million in grants and interest-free loans to help 1,012 orphans become sons and daughters in 912 Christian families since 2004 (as of early 2015) — with more adoptions being assisted every month.
