We are currently blessed with six biological children. After each child, our prayer would be that God would speak to us and show us if it was His will to have more children. In 2010, after our fourth child, God laid it on our hearts to fully trust him on our family size. Honestly, we were a little frightened by the thought of possibly having 10, 11, 12, etc children but we knew that if God wanted us to have this many children, than He would provide. All we needed to do was fully trust Him. This is where our faith was tested.

In 2011, our fifth child (son) was born. With nearly 3 months left in the pregnancy, my wife went into labor. Just hours later, our son was born prematurely and only weighed three pounds. He nearly lost his life upon delivery but his airway was finally opened on the final attempt. After spending over two months in the children’s NICU, we were finally able to bring our son home. His health has amazed the doctors and we are blessed to say that he is completely healthy. After this trial, we were tempted to call it quits and feared that we would lose the next child or something happen to my wife. However, several months after our fifth son’s birth, God reminded me of our promise to trust Him and I was overwhelmed with an assurance from God that if we trusted Him, He would give us a healthy child. Nevertheless, we were soon pregnant with our six child. God gave us great confidence during the pregnancy and I had no doubts on His promise.

Our sixth child (daughter) was born five weeks early but otherwise healthy. She passed every screening and now at 9 months old, she is thriving. God kept his promise and I personally believe that our faith was tested. After this pregnancy, specialists have told my wife that due to her physiological factors, another pregnancy could result in harm to our child or my wife. Upon considerable prayer and counseling, we believe that God can speak through doctors and we truly had a peace about the situation.

In God’s perfect timing, we were blessed to meet another Christian couple who had recently completed an international adoption and were in the process of adopting another child. They too had felt led to enjoy living a life full of God’s blessings (children) but were unable to continue having biological children due to health concerns. My wife and I believed that God was speaking to us and we began praying about adopting ourselves. I was reminded of one of my favorite Bible verses:

Psalm 127:3-5
Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

The Lord put on our hearts and showed us now more than ever that children are truly a blessing from Him. We are extremely blessed by our six biological children but the realization that orphaned children throughout the world might not have the opportunity to bless a family broke our hearts. God put in our hearts that we had more love to give and we knew that God was leading us in this direction. As I would think of excuses, we already have six children or can we meet the financial burden, each time, God assured me of His promise to provide. Not having a large sum of money on hand, I still know that without a doubt, God is calling us to adopt. I fully trust Him and He will provide for each step of the process. We just have to have complete faith in His promises. Sometimes in our spiritual walk, it can be challenging to discern God’s will. Living a debt-free life and accepting as many of God’s blessings (children) as He is willing to provide are both areas that God has made His will known to us. I am excited to see how God will work in this exciting journey.
